Book Review: In the Woods

In the Woods is the debut novel of author Tana French. It follows a Dublin murder investigator through a case that hits close to home. When Detective Ryan was little, he and his two best friends were involved in a gruesome crime and he was the only one who survived but with no memory of the incident or of what happened to his friends. Years later, he picks up a case of a murdered girl in his old hometown and has to face the demons that keep him company throughout the investigation.

This was a pretty entertaining book, very psychological thriller-ish. I felt bogged down a few times with all of the internal conflicts that the main character and some of the minor characters went through but overall, French painted a very good and descriptive picture of the main characters struggles. Just a warning, if you get squeamish over blood, children and psychological issues (sociopaths etc.) then this may not be the book for you. Overall, I'm looking forward to reading some more of French's novels.

Next book reviews to come: The Help, Faithful Place, The Virgin Suicides
