Book Review: Elizabeth Street

This was a novel that I picked up via Kindle Daily Deals (bought it for $1.99!) and it was such a fantastic book that I keep going back to the daily deals to see if I can find something just as great.

The book follows the life of Giovanna Costa from her first love and marriage in Italy, to her husband's death and her new life in New York as an Italian immigrant. The story also jumps back and forth between Giovanna's time in the early 1900s to her great-granddaughters present time in the 1980's. The interesting thing about this book is that the author, Laurie Fabiano, is actually Giovanna's great granddaughter and she wrote this book as a way to memorialize her family and their story.

Their family story is together heartbreaking and bittersweet as they struggle through life as immigrants into America. They have to deal with a language barrier, racism, cultural struggles between the Italy they left behind and the New York that they live in now. You really get a sense of the troubles the family goes through and their struggles to raise a family and make a living. This book was a fantastic read and is rich in history and culture. Highly recommended!

Happy reading!
